Rega Planar 6: The Turntable That Keeps Winning for Good Reason

TL;DR: The Rega Planar 6 has held its ground as one of the finest turntables at its price point for years, and with good reason. Available in several configurations, including the newly launched RS Edition, there is a version to suit most serious vinyl listeners. This guide covers every variant, what separates them, and which one makes the most sense for your setup.

There are turntables that get replaced every couple of years, and then there are turntables that earn a permanent place in the conversation. The Rega Planar 6 is firmly in the second category. It has collected What Hi-Fi? Awards year after year since its launch, and the reason is straightforward: Rega build things with a philosophy rather than a specification sheet, and the Planar 6 is one of the clearest expressions of that approach.

We are a Rega dealer here at Expressive Audio, and we have been recommending and demonstrating this turntable for years. If you are considering one, this guide should give you a clear sense of what you are actually buying and which version is right for you.

What Makes the Rega Planar 6 Different

Before we get into the individual variants, it is worth understanding why the Planar 6 sounds the way it does, because it is not immediately obvious from looking at it.

The plinth is built around a Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core, a material originally developed for the aerospace industry, sandwiched between layers of HPL (high pressure laminate). The result is a platform that is exceptionally rigid without being heavy. Rega's engineering philosophy holds that excess mass transmits unwanted energy into the rotating record, and the Planar 6 is designed around avoiding exactly that.

The double brace technology reinforces the plinth specifically between the tonearm mount and the main bearing hub, the two points where rigidity matters most. Combined with the dual-layer float glass platter and the Neo MK2 PSU handling motor control with DSP-generated precision, what you end up with is a deck that is built from the ground up to stay out of the music's way.

The Planar 6 Range at Expressive Audio

One thing worth knowing before we get into the specifics: the majority of Rega products at Expressive Audio are available for click-and-collect from our Lincolnshire showroom, or local delivery. We cannot ship all Rega items due to our dealer agreement, but if you want to come in and hear any of these before you buy, we would genuinely encourage that. Give us a call on 01507 499047 to arrange a demonstration.

Here is a breakdown of every Planar 6 variant available.

Rega Planar 6 Turntable (Turntable Only)

The standard Planar 6 without a factory-fitted cartridge, for listeners who already have a cartridge in mind or want to choose their own separately.

  • RB330 precision tonearm with ultra-low friction bearings
  • Tancast 8 foam core plinth with HPL laminate and double brace
  • Dual-layer float glass platter with aluminium sub-platter
  • Custom-matched Neo MK2 PSU with electronic speed change and fine speed adjustment
  • Available in Polaris grey or white

Good for: Buyers who want to fit a specific cartridge of their own choice, or who are upgrading and transferring an existing cartridge from a previous deck.

Rega Planar 6 with Nd5 Cartridge (Factory-Fitted MM)

The Planar 6 with Rega's Nd5 moving magnet cartridge fitted and aligned at the factory, offered at a package price that saves versus buying separately.

  • All standard Planar 6 features included
  • Nd5 uses a perfect elliptical nude diamond stylus with Neodymium magnet technology
  • Factory alignment removes the need for any setup on arrival
  • Discounted package rate compared to buying cartridge separately (contact us for current pricing)

Good for: Listeners stepping into serious vinyl playback for the first time at this level, or anyone who wants a complete, ready-to-play package without cartridge selection headaches.

Rega Planar 6 with Nd7 Cartridge (Factory-Fitted MM, Most Popular)

The most popular Planar 6 configuration, and the one we most commonly recommend. The Nd7 is Rega's finest moving magnet cartridge, using the same fine-line nude diamond profile found in their high-end moving coil designs.

  • All standard Planar 6 features included
  • Nd7 uses a fine-line nude diamond stylus for exceptional detail retrieval and treble clarity
  • Designed specifically for the Planar 6 and Planar 8 tonearms
  • What Hi-Fi? described this pairing as "class-leading at this level"
  • Factory-fitted and aligned at Rega's Essex facility

Good for: The listener who wants to get everything the Planar 6 platform is capable of, without moving to a moving coil cartridge. This is the sweet spot of the range for most buyers.

Rega Planar 6 RS Edition (Rega Special Edition with Nd9 and RB880)

The newest and most technically accomplished member of the Planar 6 family, launched in 2026. The RS Edition borrows significant hardware from the Planar 8 to create a version of the Planar 6 that sits between the standard deck and the step-up model in terms of performance.

  • RB880 tonearm (usually found on the Planar 8) with upgraded vertical bearing and low-mass aluminium and stainless-steel assembly
  • Factory-fitted Nd9 moving magnet cartridge, Rega's top-of-range MM with boron cantilever and Aphelion 2 stylus profile
  • CNC-machined twin drive pulley with two Reference EBLT belts for improved speed accuracy
  • Brushed aluminium skin finish over the Tancast 8 plinth for added rigidity and a distinctive look
  • Double brace system, Neo MK2 PSU, smoked dust cover and custom stainless-steel balance weight included
  • Priced at £2,000, offering a £740 saving compared to buying the standard Planar 6 turntable, the RB880 tonearm and the Nd9 cartridge separately

Good for: The serious enthusiast who wants Planar 8-level hardware in a more traditionally styled deck with a dust cover, or anyone who wants the very best the Planar 6 platform can deliver without stepping up to the Planar 8.

A Note on Pairing

The Planar 6 is a revealing deck, which means what you pair it with matters. A decent phono stage is important, and Rega's own Fono MM MK5 is the natural companion if you are using a moving magnet cartridge. If you go to the RS Edition with the Nd9, it is highly worth considering a phono stage upgrade, as the Nd9 will show up the limitations of a budget stage fairly quickly. The forthcoming AOS MM phono stage will be a perfect option.

If you have questions about pairing, give us a call or come in. That kind of conversation is exactly what we are here for.

Conclusion

The Rega Planar 6 has earned its reputation honestly, through consistent performance, thoughtful engineering, and a sound that rewards long listening sessions rather than showing off on first impressions. Whichever variant you choose, you are buying into a turntable with real longevity, and one that the team at Expressive Audio know well and believe in.

FAQs

It has won What Hi-Fi? Awards consistently since launch, which is a reasonable indicator that the wider press agrees it is. In our experience, it outperforms most of what you can buy at a similar price and punches above it in the areas that matter most for vinyl: timing, detail, and musicality. Whether it is worth it depends on your wider system, and we are happy to talk that through with you.

The RS Edition uses the RB880 tonearm (borrowed from the Planar 8), a twin-belt drive system, a brushed aluminium plinth skin, and comes factory-fitted with the Nd9 cartridge as standard. The standard Planar 6 uses the RB330 arm and is available with Nd5, Nd7 or no cartridge. The RS Edition is priced at £2,000 and represents a meaningful performance step up.

Due to our dealer agreement with Rega, most Rega products are available for click-and-collect from our Lincolnshire showroom, or local delivery within our area. We cannot ship them all nationally. If you are based in Lincolnshire or the surrounding counties, get in touch and we can arrange everything from there.

For most buyers, the Nd7 package is our recommendation. It is the most popular pairing for good reason: the fine-line stylus profile extracts more detail than the Nd5, and at the Planar 6's price point, the deck is capable enough to justify it. If you are interested in moving coil, the Ania Pro is the factory-fitted MC option, though it will also require a suitable phono stage. Come in and we can demo both for you.
