TL;DR: D'Von Audio are a Devon-based British loudspeaker manufacturer making handmade, beautifully finished speakers that caused huge excitement at the Bristol HiFi Show in February 2026. Expressive Audio is one of only three retailers in the UK to stock the Aurora range, and we have the SQ-20 in our Lincolnshire showroom. This guide introduces the Aurora series and suggests the best system pairings at two levels to get the most from them.

New loudspeaker brands do not come along that often. And brands that arrive with genuinely impressive products, strong press coverage, and a clear engineering identity are rarer still. D'Von Audio are exactly that kind of arrival, and having heard the SQ-20 in our own showroom, we are genuinely pleased to be one of only three retailers in the UK to stock them.

The name is a play on Devon, the county in South West England where founder Chris Priddle designs and builds every speaker by hand in his Exeter factory. Chris spent 23 years as a carpenter and joiner before turning his long-standing passion for loudspeaker design into D'Von Audio Limited in 2019. That background shows in the cabinet construction, which is among the most precisely built we have seen at this price from any manufacturer, British or otherwise. The mitre-folded joints, the thick front baffles, the Italian-painted finishes: these are speakers built with genuine care and attention to detail.

At the Bristol HiFi Show in February 2026, D'Von caused what HiFi+ described as one of the standout debuts of the show, with listeners walking out saying they "can't believe how much they aren't". Here is our introduction to the Aurora range.

The Aurora Range: Three Speakers, One Design Philosophy

Every speaker in the Aurora range shares the same core engineering approach. Cabinets are built from European-sourced hidrofugo MDF, a moisture-resistant, high-density board that is internally braced and specifically chosen for its acoustic properties. SB Acoustics drivers are used throughout, with carbon fibre cone woofers paired with soft dome tweeters and crossovers built by hand at the Devon factory using Jantzen Audio components. Port plugs are supplied with every model, allowing you to tune the bass output to suit your room if needed.

Finish options across the range include Black, White, Birch Black (birch ply front baffle with black sides), Birch White, Suit Blue, Burgundy, Charcoal Grey, and Dark Forest Green, all spray-painted using high-quality Italian paint. D'Von also make matching dedicated stands for the SQ-10 and SQ-20, built from the same materials and finished in the same colour options.

The Speakers

D'Von Audio Aurora SQ-10 Bookshelf Speaker — from £1,700

The entry point to the Aurora range, and a compact two-way standmount designed for those who want genuinely serious performance in a space-conscious format. At its heart is a 5-inch reinforced carbon fibre mid/bass driver delivering articulate, natural tones with bass depth and control that belies the cabinet's compact footprint. A 19mm soft dome tweeter handles the upper frequencies with precision, and the crossover is hand-built at the Exeter factory using Jantzen Audio components.

The SQ-10 cabinet is constructed from high-density hidrofugo MDF with an internal I-structure brace and resonance damping throughout. At 7.2kg each, it is a substantial speaker for its size, and that rigidity is audible in how it controls cabinet resonance. A port plug is supplied, and the port is tuned at 58Hz.

  • 5-inch carbon fibre mid/bass driver
  • 19mm soft dome tweeter
  • Hidrofugo MDF cabinet with I-structure internal brace
  • 4 ohm nominal impedance, 7.2kg each
  • Port plug included for bass tuning
  • From £1,700 (Black/White), from £1,800 (Birch front options)
  • Matching D'Von Aurora stands available separately from £700

Good for: Listeners who want a compact, beautifully finished British standmount with serious acoustic engineering behind it, suited to small and medium-sized rooms.

D'Von Audio Aurora SQ-20 Standmount Speaker — from £2,500

The SQ-20 is the model currently in our Lincolnshire showroom, and the one that earned D'Von their first serious press attention. HiFi Pig reviewed it in March 2026, awarding it five hearts and describing the cabinet as "one of the most professionally built" at the price, with sound that "belies its small dimensions". At 206 x 391 x 288mm, it is a compact speaker, but it claims bass extension to 36Hz in-room and delivers on that claim convincingly.

The 6-inch woofer uses a Rohacell and carbon fibre sandwiched cone for high stiffness and excellent dampening, paired with a 26mm soft dome tweeter from SB Acoustics. The crossover kicks in at a notably low 2.1kHz using a 2nd-order bass filter and 3rd-order treble filter, hand-built at the Exeter factory. The front baffle is a generous 30mm thick, with 18mm cabinet walls throughout. Rhodium-plated speaker terminals are fitted at the rear, and a magnetic speaker grille is included alongside the port plug.

HiFi Pig noted the SQ-20 "playing all types of music with both conviction and delicacy," with "exceptional soundstage" and an "almost perfect response" that was "mightily impressive for a first loudspeaker from the company".

  • 6-inch Rohacell and carbon fibre sandwiched cone woofer (SB Acoustics)
  • 26mm soft dome tweeter (SB Acoustics)
  • 2.1kHz crossover frequency, hand-built using Jantzen Audio components
  • 87dB sensitivity, 4 ohm nominal (3.7 ohm minimum), 40 to 200W recommended
  • 36Hz to 21kHz in-room frequency response, 48Hz port tuning
  • 30mm front baffle, 18mm cabinet walls, 9.5kg each
  • Magnetic grille and port plugs included
  • Five Hearts, HiFi Pig
  • From £2,500 (Black/White), from £2,650 (Birch front options)
  • Matching D'Von Aurora stands available from £700 to £750

Good for: Listeners who want a genuinely ambitious standmount with impressive bass extension and premium cabinet construction, suited to medium rooms and confident amplification.

D'Von Audio Aurora SQ-40 Floorstanding Speaker — from £4,000

The flagship of the Aurora range, and the speaker that prompted The Ear to open their July 2026 review with the words "these floorstanders from D'Von Audio are stunningly good". Having debuted at the Bristol HiFi Show to considerable acclaim, D'Von have delivered a speaker that The Ear described as performing "at a much higher price point" than its asking price, with "easy differentiation between louder passages and quieter internal themes" and bass that is "nicely weighted, clear and with appropriate heft when needed".

The SQ-40 is a 2.5-way design using twin 6-inch carbon fibre cone mid/bass drivers with a 26mm soft dome tweeter, in a slim floorstanding HDHMR cabinet standing 1,074mm tall and weighing 24kg each. The crossover frequency is 2.1kHz, consistent with the SQ-20, and the speaker is rated at 90dB sensitivity with a 4 ohm nominal impedance.

The Ear tested the SQ-40 with amplification ranging from 15-watt valve amplifiers to 200-watt solid-state designs, noting that the speaker's benign 4-ohm load allowed even lower-powered valve amplifiers to deliver satisfying results, with larger amplifiers unlocking greater bass authority and ultimate volume.

  • 2.5-way floorstanding design, twin 6-inch carbon fibre cone mid/bass drivers
  • 26mm soft dome tweeter, 2.1kHz crossover frequency
  • 90dB sensitivity, 4 ohm nominal (3 ohm minimum), HDHMR cabinet
  • 35Hz to 21kHz in-room frequency response
  • 1,074 x 258 x 348mm, 24kg each
  • 5 year warranty, port plugs and spikes included
  • Wide finish choice including solid colours and Birch/Walnut baffle options
  • From £4,000 (solid colours), from £4,250 (Birch/Walnut baffle)

Good for: Serious listeners in medium to large rooms who want a flagship British floorstander capable of delivering genuine scale, dynamics, and emotional engagement across a wide range of music and amplification.

Two Levels of System: What We Recommend

One of the questions we get asked most when a new speaker brand arrives is: what do I pair it with? Having had the SQ-20 in our showroom and heard the SQ-40 at show conditions with Cyrus amplification, here are two complete system recommendations at different levels, plus an entry-level option for the SQ-10.

Entry Level: D'Von SQ-10 with Rega or Arcam

The SQ-10 is the most accessible entry point into the Aurora range, and it pairs naturally with two different system approaches depending on your priorities.

If you are vinyl-focused and based locally, the Rega Brio MK7 and Rega Planar 3 RS make an exceptional all-British pairing with the SQ-10. The Brio's musical drive and the Planar 3 RS's refined vinyl performance complement the SQ-10's character particularly well. Please note that the Rega Brio MK7 and Planar 3 RS are available for click-and-collect from our Lincolnshire showroom or local delivery only.

For a more versatile system that can be shipped nationally, the Arcam A5+ paired with the Arcam CD5 covers CD, streaming, vinyl, and wireless listening in two well-matched boxes that work beautifully with the SQ-10.

Mid Level: D'Von SQ-20 with Arcam

The SQ-20 is the model we have in our showroom and the one we have matched directly with Arcam electronics. The Arcam A25+ is the natural amplifier partner: 100 watts of Class G amplification with a built-in phono stage, DAC, and Bluetooth, giving the SQ-20 the power and refinement to perform at its best. The Arcam CD5 completes the system as a capable, award-winning CD source that matches the A25+ both visually and sonically.

When the Arcam CD25 becomes available later in 2026, it will be an excellent step-up source for this pairing, with its dual-mono DAC architecture and balanced outputs bringing a noticeably more refined and spacious presentation to the system.

Higher Level: D'Von SQ-40 with Cyrus 40 Series

The SQ-40 rewards serious amplification, and the Cyrus 40 Series is an ideal match. D'Von Audio have photographed the Aurora range extensively alongside Cyrus 40 Series components, and it is easy to see why: both brands share a commitment to precise British engineering and a clean, purposeful aesthetic that sits together naturally.

The Cyrus 40 AMP delivers 100 watts per channel from a wideband amplifier design extending from DC to beyond 100kHz, built around an ESS ES9039Q2M DAC and a generously over-specified power supply. What HiFi? described it as "well-built, fully equipped, looks smart and sounds excellent." Paired with the Cyrus 40 CD, which The Ear awarded their Editors Choice for its "hugely capable and engaging" performance, or the Cyrus 40 ST streamer for those who stream primarily, this is a complete, high-performing all-British system built around one of the most exciting new speaker brands in years. The Cyrus 40 PSU can be added later as an upgrade for further improvement in noise floor and resolution.
